What the Porscheplatz actually is
This is not a city square in the European sense of a place to sit with a coffee. The Porscheplatz is the forecourt of Porsche's headquarters in Zuffenhausen, in the north of Stuttgart, and everything on it belongs to the company.
What dominates it is the Porsche Museum, which opened in 2009 to a design by the Vienna practice Delugan Meissl. The building's white body cantilevers out over the plaza on three V-shaped supports so that it appears to hover above the ground. Walking underneath it is the reason to arrive on foot rather than drive straight into the garage.
Right next door is the main plant, where Porsches have been built since 1938. Seeing the factory itself requires a booked factory tour. The square and the museum are open to anyone, the square freely and the museum on a ticket.
Getting to the Porscheplatz
The S-Bahn is the simplest way. From Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, the main station, take the S6 toward Weil der Stadt or the S60 toward Leonberg and ride to the station named Neuwirtshaus (Porscheplatz). The station sits immediately at the museum, so there is no walk and no transfer to work out. The S-Bahn is the regional commuter rail network; buy and validate a VVS ticket before you board, because there are no gates and no conductor at the door.
By car the route runs to Zuffenhausen in northern Stuttgart. There is a paid underground garage beneath the museum building with enough capacity that arriving on a weekend is normally not a problem.
Porsche Museum: hours and prices
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9am to 6pm and closed on Mondays. Admission is 8 euros, 4 euros reduced, and children under 14 get in free. From 5pm there are evening tickets at half price, which makes the museum a good closing move at the end of a Stuttgart day rather than a whole-morning commitment.
There is a coffee bar, a bistro and a restaurant in the building, so you can eat on site instead of hunting for a restaurant in an industrial district. If you want the full automotive double header, pair this with the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Untertürkheim on the opposite side of the city.
