Where it sits in the Kessel

Stuttgart-Nord starts just behind the Hauptbahnhof and climbs the northern wall of the Kessel. The lower streets are dense turn-of-the-century apartment blocks; the higher you go, the greener and quieter it gets, until the district opens into the Killesberg with its hillside park and lookout tower.

It is one of the districts where the Stäffele matter, the public outdoor stairways that climb the vineyard and hillside slopes all over Stuttgart. Walking uphill here often means stairs rather than a switchback street.

Getting downtown

From the lower part of the district, the Hauptbahnhof and the top of the Königstraße are a walk of ten to fifteen minutes, mostly downhill on the way in. From the Killesberg, light rail reaches the center in roughly ten to fifteen minutes.

What is within walking distance

The Killesberg hillside park with its lookout tower and, close by, the Weissenhofsiedlung, the 1927 modernist housing estate with buildings by Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. For anyone interested in twentieth-century architecture, that pairing is the reason to stay up here.

Who this district suits

Architecture travelers, runners and anyone who has already done the downtown checklist and would rather wake up to park air. Hotel supply is limited and largely small-scale, so it works better as a considered choice than as a fallback.
