Where it sits in the Kessel

Stuttgart-West occupies the western flank of the basin, directly alongside the center. It is the most densely built Wilhelminian-era quarter in Germany, block after block of five-story apartment buildings from around 1900, with almost no gaps and very few modern intrusions at street level.

The Feuersee, a small lake with the neo-Gothic Johanneskirche standing at its edge, is the district's picture-postcard corner and its most reliable landmark.

Getting downtown

The Feuersee has its own S-Bahn station, one stop from the Hauptbahnhof, so the ride downtown is a matter of a few minutes. On foot, Bismarckplatz to the Königstraße is about ten to fifteen minutes on level ground.

What is within walking distance

Cafés, bakeries, boutiques and neighborhood restaurants along the Schwabenstraße and around Bismarckplatz. Above the district the ground rises toward the Birkenkopf, the hill built from World War II rubble that locals nickname Monte Scherbelino, with a full panorama over the city from the top.

Who this district suits

Travelers who want to sleep in a real neighborhood, eat where locals eat and still walk to the main sights. Nights are noticeably quieter than around the Theodor-Heuss-Straße, and the district is flat enough for easy walking.
