Where it sits in the Kessel
Degerloch sits on the rim, up on the Filder plateau above the southern edge of the Kessel. Being out of the bowl changes the weather: it is breezier, a few degrees cooler in summer, and it holds snow when the valley floor has already turned to slush.
The Fernsehturm, the world's first television tower built in reinforced concrete and opened in 1956, stands here and is visible from most of the city. Its observation deck looks over the Neckar valley, the vineyards and, on a clear day, as far as the Black Forest.
Getting downtown
Light rail runs from Degerloch down into the center in roughly ten to fifteen minutes. The more entertaining option is the Zahnradbahn, the rack railway locals call the Zacke, which has run since 1884 from Marienplatz in Stuttgart-Süd up to Degerloch, climbing gradients of up to 17.8 percent over a little more than a mile. It is ordinary public transit, not a tourist ride, so a normal VVS transit ticket covers it.
By car, downtown is ten to fifteen minutes down the Weinsteige switchbacks outside rush hour, and parking up here is far easier than in the basin.
Who this district suits
Anyone arriving by car, anyone who sleeps badly in a noisy city center, and anyone who wants the TV tower at sunset without a long trip back. It is also convenient for the airport and the trade-fair grounds, which lie further out on the same plateau.
The trade-off is that dinner options are neighborhood-scale and you will use the light rail for anything downtown.
