Where to stay in Stuttgart.
Stuttgart is not a city where the hotel district picks itself. The center sits on the floor of the Kessel, the steep bowl-shaped valley the downtown is built into, and the rest of the city climbs the slopes or spreads across the plateaus above. The car museums that bring most international visitors here are in two different outer districts. The airport and the trade-fair grounds are on a third.
This page sorts 18 hotels two ways: by the kind of trip you are taking, and by the district they sit in. Prices are not listed here because this guide does not track them. Use the live map further down for current rates.
First-timers: stay in Mitte
If this is your first trip to Stuttgart, book in Stuttgart-Mitte, the city center on the floor of the Kessel. Schlossplatz, the Königstraße shopping axis, the Staatsgalerie, the Kunstmuseum, the Old Palace and the Market Hall are all inside one walking radius, and the Hauptbahnhof puts both car museums within roughly ten to fifteen minutes by S-Bahn commuter rail.
The trade-off is noise on Friday and Saturday nights around the Theodor-Heuss-Straße bar strip. Ask for a courtyard-facing room if that matters to you.
Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin
Travelers arriving by train who want a grand-hotel address and a Michelin dinner downstairs.
Le Méridien Stuttgart
Opera and concert nights, and anyone who wants a park rather than a shopping street outside the window.
Althoff Hotel am Schlossgarten
A short, indulgent city break where the hotel itself is part of the plan.
Maritim Stuttgart
Conference guests and groups who need a large house with predictable four-star standards.
Hotel Unger
Visitors who would rather deal with an owner than a front-desk system, on a station-adjacent budget.
Hampton by Hilton Stuttgart City Centre
American travelers who want a familiar brand standard and breakfast built into the rate.
Mercure Hotel Stuttgart City Centre
A no-surprises four-star base in the middle of town.
Motel One Stuttgart-Hauptbahnhof
Weekend trips where you only need the room for sleeping and want the money in the location.
Premier Inn Stuttgart City
Budget travelers who care more about the mattress than the lobby.
Ibis Stuttgart City
One-night stops and early departures from the main station.
Hotel Wartburg
Guests who prefer a privately run house with a long track record to a chain.
Aloft Stuttgart
Design-minded travelers who want a central base next to the main station without a chain-hotel feel.
EmiLu Design Hotel
Travelers who want a design address downtown rather than a chain room.
Car pilgrims: Zuffenhausen and Untertürkheim
The two museums that bring most American visitors to Stuttgart sit in opposite corners of the city. The Porsche Museum is in Zuffenhausen in the north, next to the plant where Porsche has built cars since 1938. The Mercedes-Benz Museum is in Untertürkheim in the southeast, where Daimler put his engine factory in 1904.
Both districts are reachable from the center in roughly ten to fifteen minutes by S-Bahn, so you do not have to sleep next to them. If you want to be at a museum door when it opens, or you are here for a factory tour, staying in the district makes sense for a night. For a full city trip it does not: restaurant choice is thin and everything else is a train ride away.
Trade fair and airport guests: the Filder plateau
Stuttgart Airport and the Messe Stuttgart trade-fair grounds share a site on the Filder plateau south of the city, in and around Möhringen and Vaihingen. Hotels out here are built for early flights and 8am booth openings, and several connect to the terminal or the halls directly.
The S-Bahn runs from the airport station into the city center, so an evening downtown stays practical. During big fairs, downtown rates rise and the plateau hotels are frequently the better value.

Pullman Stuttgart Fontana

Mövenpick Hotel Stuttgart Airport
Early flights and fair days where every extra transfer is a problem.
Filderhotel Stuttgart
Airport nights on a mid-range budget, with dinner on site.
DORMERO Hotel Stuttgart
Guests who want spa facilities and parking with the city a short tram ride away.
Families and spa days: Bad Cannstatt
Bad Cannstatt sits across the Neckar from downtown on flat ground, about five minutes from the main station by S-Bahn. It has the Wilhelma, Stuttgart's zoo and botanical garden inside a Moorish-revival palace complex, the mineral baths fed by the springs that give the district the Bad in its name, and Rosenstein Palace Park.
Hotels here tend to be larger, with parking and a pool, which is exactly what a family trip wants. Watch the calendar: during the Frühlingsfest in spring and the Cannstatter Volksfest in fall the district is at capacity.
Repeat visitors: West, Süd, Nord and Degerloch
If you have already done the downtown checklist, sleep in a neighborhood instead. Stuttgart-West is the most densely built Wilhelminian-era quarter in Germany, flat, quiet at night and ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the Königstraße. Stuttgart-Süd around Marienplatz and the Heusteigviertel has the café and wine-bar density plus the Zacke, the rack railway that has climbed to Degerloch since 1884.
Stuttgart-Nord puts you next to the Killesberg park and the Weissenhofsiedlung, the 1927 UNESCO-listed modernist housing estate. Degerloch sits up on the plateau at the TV tower, breezier than the valley floor, easier to park in and ten to fifteen minutes from the center by light rail.

Common questions
Where should I stay in Stuttgart as a first-time visitor?
Stuttgart-Mitte. The palace square, the Königstraße, the Market Hall and both big art museums are all walkable from there, and the main station connects you to the car museums in roughly ten to fifteen minutes.
Do I need a car in Stuttgart?
No. S-Bahn commuter rail, light rail and buses cover every district in this guide on one VVS transit fare, including the Zacke, the rack railway up to Degerloch, which is ordinary public transit rather than a tourist ride. Downtown parking is expensive and the garages fill early.
How far is the Porsche Museum from the city center?
Roughly fifteen minutes by S-Bahn from the main station to Neuwirtshaus (Porscheplatz), in the district of Zuffenhausen. The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Untertürkheim is about ten minutes in the other direction.
When are hotels in Stuttgart hardest to book?
During major trade fairs, and around the two big folk festivals on the Cannstatter Wasen: the Frühlingsfest in spring and the Cannstatter Volksfest in fall. The Christmas market in December also fills the center.
