From farm estate to barracks
The Burgholzhof began as agriculture. In 1829 a Cannstatt innkeeper named Weisser bought up land on the Wolfersberg and built an estate there, which took the name Burgholzhof in 1837; it appears in the land registers for the first time in 1838.
From 1927 the ground served as a training area for the Cannstatt dragoon barracks, and the Wehrmacht's Flandernkaserne was later built here. After the Second World War the US Army took the site over: from 1949 it used the barracks as the Robinson Barracks and put up housing blocks between the buildings for service families.
The conversion into a neighborhood
In 1993 the United States vacated the southern part of the site. That gave Stuttgart the chance to redevelop the Flandernkaserne grounds and the adjoining training areas for housing. Between 1996 and 2006 the present-day Burgholzhof quarter was built there, with roughly 1,100 housing units.
About 3,000 people live here now. The share of young families is high, with around a quarter of residents under 25, and that shapes the character of the place: a lot of green space, short distances and infrastructure aimed at children. Administratively the Burgholzhof belongs to the Bad Cannstatt city district.
